The N-terminal of the prohormone brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a 76 amino acid N-terminal inactive protein that is cleaved from proBNP to release brain natriuretic peptide. NT-proBNP is a marker of hemodynamic stress on the heart, denoting the neurohumoral activation of the myocardium.

  • Diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Grade and prognosis of heart failure
  • Risk stratification of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and CHF
  • Differential diagnosis for cardiac and pulmonary diseases in patients with acute dyspnea
  • Monitor in patients with left ventricular dysfunction (LVD).

NT-proBNP levels are significantly higher in patients with CHF than in those
with non-cardiac origin dyspnea. The NT-proBNP concentration provides an
accurate means of diagnosing heart failure
