Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids.Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol)and vitamin 03 (Cholecalciferol) are two major forms of Vitamin D in human body.
25-0H Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitami n D, also known as Calcifediol), is a prehormone that is produced in the liver by hydroxylation of Vitamin D by the enzyme cholecalciferol 25-hydroxylase. Then, 25-0H Vitamin D is convert into Calcitriol (1,25-(0H)2 D3 ) in the kidneys, a secosteroid hormone that is the active form of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is multiple- function hormone for maintaining body health. It regulated the Calcium and Phosphorus concentration in Bone metabolism. It also plays a very important role in other systems of human body, such as preventing cancer, protecting cardiovascular system, preventing diabetes, promoting cell proliferation.
25-0H Vitamin D blood test is used to determine the Vitamin D level in the body. The blood concentration of 25-0H Vitamin D is considered the best indicator of vitamin D status.
Major Source of Vitamin D
- Vitamin D3: Conversed from 7-dehydrogenation cholesterol in the upper layer of the skin during UV Exposure, partly taken from food.
- Vitamin D2: Taken from food such as vegetables and fugues.
